LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — In this short video in ASL (American Sign Language) and English subtitles, Lexie (Courtney O’Donnell) addresses trans violence and need to take steps to stay alive.
Hello, my name is Lexie.
Today, I want to talk about staying alive.
Around the world there are many people with a deep hatred of transgender people.
Some will commit acts of violence against us . . . even murder . . . just to oppress us.
The most dangerous place for trans people is South America and Mexico. The rate of trans murder is sky high there.
In the United States, an average of 25 trans people are killed each year. In the world overall, 200 to 300 trans people are killed each year.
I encourage everyone to take steps to be safe. Be aware of your surroundings and watch what other people are doing. Travel with large groups of people, and avoid unsafe areas.
If you’ve the feeling something is wrong, leave the place right away!
Sex workers should be exceptionally vigilant. Knowing who and what’s going on around you is vital in preventing you from becoming a victim.
Remember, your safety depends on you taking steps to be safe!
See you next time, stay alive, rock on and love to all of you!
