LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Anyone can create a “medical” (or “professional”) organization. All it takes is a website and the creation of a legit-sounding name. People do this all the time to either oppose or support a pet cause. What the reader needs to do is to check the group’s legitimacy before buying what’s being sold.
One such group is the American College of Pediatricians, which is factually, a conservative think tank. Earlier this year this group went on a tirade against trans kids under the disguise of “science.” Through the use of distortions, myths, misrepresentations, rhetoric and outright lies, the group hopes people who aren’t well-versed in research and the science method are swayed away from the idea that trans kids even exist.
This fakery has an immediate negative impact on trans kids. Some of them with current access to medical and peer support may now be denied that avenue by gullible parents and supervising adults, resulting in needless tragic consequences for them.
Indeed, writer Zack Ford, in a recent article debunking the American College of Pediatricians, made that point in Think Progress:
“. . . [American College of Pediatricians] has an “ethical” point of view that is anti-trans, and it is more interested in defending adults who agree with that position than it is helping children who are hurt by it. . . .
. . . By distorting research to discourage affirming care for transgender kids and adults, [American College of Pediatricians] is exacerbating that very rejection [by society] and giving license for others to do the same.”
Ford does a great debunking job in his piece and I encourage others with a hand in all things transgender to take a look.

Our society is filled with bogus groups and hucksters because there is a seemingly unlimited supply of folks ready to slurp it all up. In this case, the liberal application of critical thinking skills will keep this particular group from harming trans kids.
