“Multnomah county Circuit Judge Thomas Ryan found Michael Aaron Strickland, 37, guilty of 10 counts of unlawful use of a weapon, 10 counts of menacing and one count of second-degree disorderly conduct for pointing his Glock semi-automatic handgun at 10 protesters. . . .
Strickland makes a living as an independent videographer-journalist and was at the July 7 demonstration last year to record it. Members of the groups Don’t Shoot Portland and Black Lives Matter were protesting the shooting deaths of two African Americans by police earlier that week in Minnesota and Louisiana.
During closing arguments, prosecutor Todd Jackson said no one touched Strickland and that he overreacted. The men carrying flagpoles weren’t near Strickland when he took out his gun, Jackson said.
Strickland could have simply turned and run away if he had been afraid, prosecutors said.
Jackson said Strickland’s contention that he was in grave danger isn’t believable, pointing out that Stickland reholstered his gun and stepped off the street and onto the sidewalk to give an interview in front of a TV camera just steps away from the scene of the confrontation.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: A Portland, Oregon man who pulled out a gun screaming “everybody get the hell back!” during a Black Lives Matter/Don’t Shoot PDX protest last month, was charged this week with 10 counts of unlawful use of a weapon (felonies), 10 counts of menacing and a disorderly conduct charge following from a grand jury decision.
Michael Strickland, a noted Portland area conservative who runs a “Laughing at Liberals” social media site, as well as a pro-gun site, was arrested July 7th when a police officer heard the crowd shout “he’s got a gun” and turned to see Strickland sweeping the crowd with his weapon. A few peacemakers in the crowd defused the scene and turned Strickland over to the police who were in full riot gear.
Strickland told KOIN-TV that he feared for his life. The in addition to the loaded gun, he carried an extended clip, five magazines and a pocket knife. He had a conceal permit which has since been yanked according to the Portland Mercury.
Some of Strickland’s “Laughing at Liberals” targets are trans people, including a recent mocking a trans person who showed up at a vigil for the Orlando massacre according to the Portland Mercury. Strickland was previously banned from locations such as Portland Community College and Portland State University for previous antics.
Strickland spent a week in jail on a gun and menacing charge until he was able to post bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned again today for the additional charges. Strickland’s lawyer stated he was journalist who has every right to protect himself.
