LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — A man arrested a few days after the murder of a Philadelphia trans woman just over a year ago has pleaded guilty. Raheam Felton was sentenced to 22 to 44 years for the murder of London Chanel in May 2015.
Chanel had recently moved to Philadelphia from Texas and was living with a roommate, Mayai Bankz. At their place of residence, Bankz’s then boyfriend Felton, stabbed Chanel during a domestic dispute. Felton initially put the blame on an unknown person, but police quickly pinned it on Felton. Bankz later became the state’s witness to Felton’s wrongdoing.
Just prior to the trial, Felton changed his mind about wanting a trial and instead pleaded guilty the crime. Felton apologized to Chanel’s family just prior to sentencing.
This has been a fairly good year in attaining justice for trans murder victims. I believe this is the 6th sentencing since TDOR 2015.

A healthy murder sentence for this one.
Tragic for all parties involved, but this strong sentence shows respect for Chanel. That is good.
Yup. He also fessed up and apologized. Something not always seen.
It is very good that he got charged properly but I feel he should have gotten a life sentence.
Seriously not enough time. He took a life; should have been life with out parole . Really sad that’s all the time he will serve.
I’m saddened for London Chanel’s death. Such a beautiful woman. Her life cut short because of a crazy domestic dispute.
I only wish we could help prevent this. Yes, other people are murdered, especially women of color, but the transgender population, going by numbers, seems to get it pretty heavy, and when race, class and gender intersect, the risk goes up further. I have read that the Orlando attacks in part is because as a group gains visibility, reactionaries and extremists hatred boils and they go to violent measures.
Sadly wonderful. So often we are given no interest at all by police and lawmakers. It’s good to know we’re finally being treated as people in America, or parts thereof at least.
RIP to the victim, and my sincerest condolences to her family and friends.
Ever on we march!
