LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — With the room laughing along, an armed law enforcement officer stated he’d violently harm unarmed trans people if he finds them in the ladies bathroom.
Spartanburg County (South Carolina) Sheriff Chuck Wright made these remarks at a Republican Women’s meeting in support of an anti-trans bathroom bill being considered by the state legislature.
Wright: “I’ll be honest with you, I don’t even know why there’s an issue about which bathroom to use. Because if you are a guy and you go into bathroom with my wife, I’m gonna make the news — I know there’s three cameras rolling — I’m gonna whip your tail if you go in there with my wife while she’s trying to use the bathroom, or my granddaughter. That is bologna.” . . .
“So, I don’t really understand why there’s an issue in any legislation, or state senators or whatever gotta make that stuff. I mean, the men’s room is for the men. The girl’s room is for the girls. We were taught the symbol when we were little and we couldn’t read. Wearing a dress is supposed to be a chick. Supposed to anyway. Unless you’re raising money for something. Listen, I’ve dressed up like a girl to raise money for under-privileged kids. But I was the only one who didn’t take it seriously. I didn’t shave. I tried to look like a man dressed up like a chick.”
When asked about his comments later, Wright says he stands by them and says he has received nothing but praise since a video of the meeting surfaced on the internet.
National Center For Transgender Education’s Mara Keisling: “I am shocked that Sheriff Wright would threaten police brutality against South Carolinians for doing something everyone has to do every day. Transgender people have been using public restrooms that match who the gender they live as every day across South Carolina without hurting anyone, and this man is threatening them with physical harm. He does not seem fit to be a law enforcement officer. And the legislators in South Carolina that are scaring the public about transgender people to score some political points should be ashamed of themselves. Governor Haley was correct: South Carolina does not need this bill. Nor does it need this hate-filled conversation or this sheriff.”
A man with a gun wearing a badge threatening to beat trans people up? You’ll find it in South Carolina. Governor Haley, if you’ve a backbone, you’ll rip Sheriff Wright to shreds.

UPDATE March 17, 2016. Apparently Sheriff Wright’s county has been having trouble with peeping toms in the MEN’s bathroom. This from Facebook by J Sherylyn Sanders:
“Just found this little gem, while the Sheriff of Spartanburg County is threatening innocents just wanting to use the restroom, Spartanburg City police are trying to find a male who was photographing kids in a public mens room. Of course, this story was buried on the local news website:
SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) – Spartanburg police are asking for the public’s help to identify a man suspected of recording a child in a public restroom.The agency added more photos of the suspect on its Facebook page in the hopes of getting help are posting these pictures again and adding some new ones in the hope that someone would know who he is.”

This person is definitely unfit to be the sheriff. I doubt he has had any education towards trans people or their experiences. The fear mongering and threatening a group of people who have done nothing wrong is unconstitutional. I urge each and all to have this biased bully removed from office, Does the South really have such a short memory of what hatred does to a country?

Cross dressing sheriff tells a room full of “Chicks” that he is ignorant to transgender people and suffers from violent outbursts.
Thick as two short planks – I’m sure one can find more intelligent life on the bottom of ponds. Using the force of the state to promote ones own phobic agenda is about as…screwed up as it gets. No doubt he thought what’s said in his county would stay in his county. Another symptom of having the outlook of a frog in a well. I’ve seen more insight from Shaggy and Scooby Doo.
“I don’t understand”……and THAT, Sheriff, is the problem. Now, instead of being an ignorant sod, how about you learn to “understand” before you ‘shoot’ (pardon the pun) your mouth off.
This is the kind of cop that gets good copd killed. The one that serve and protect avery one not who they want too sad.
I have sent an email to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office as follows:-
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing in absolute disgust about the recent remarks captured on video made by a sheriff in your department. This is a man who has sworn to uphold the peace threatening a peaceful citizen with a severe beating (or worse) for using a public toilet.
Who the hell does he think he is, taking the law into his own hands like that? This video is being shared around the civilised world with horror at his reactions and threats and brings the USA (and its police departments) into disrepute for violating the human rights of its citizens. With thugs of this calibre, no wonder so many people of colour are needlessly being murdered by police officers in your country.
Shame on you for hiring such an individual as a police officer.

He is out of uniform. He should not be wear his piece or badge. If he hits an actual trans person, it would fall under assault.
Bret that would fall under federal hate crimes law which means the FBI would be looking into it IF he assaulted any one in the LGBT community

Sheriffs are generally elected. City police chiefs are usually hired.
