LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — On the heels of the announcement of a transgender studies degree program at the University of Arizona last month, word comes of the establishment a chair of transgender studies at a Canadian university.
This research position at the University of Victoria in British Columbia is being funded by trans woman Jennifer Pritzker, a Chicago billionaire. Pritzker’s foundation will fund two million dollars and Aaron Devor, a sociologist studying trans issues for 30 yearsm was named to the chair.
Devor: “Far too many trans and gender-nonconforming people still live in poverty and fear. As the inaugural chair, I will act as a resource locally and internationally for those needing information for their own research or for policy development, as well as building linkages between community-based and academic scholars working in transgender studies.”
Pritzker, who is a veteran, previously funded a study that is helping lift the ban on transgender military service.
In December, Susan Stryker of the University of Arizona Institute for LGBT Studies said a transgender studies degree program is being developed and would start this year.
