The Guardian: “A transgender woman has become the second trans prisoner in the space of a month to apparently take their own life while serving time in a male jail in England.

Joanne Latham, 38, from Nottingham, died in Woodhill prison in Milton Keynes on Friday.  . . . She was serving a number of life sentences for attempted murder  . . .

Her death comes just weeks after the death of 21-year old Vicky Thompson, who was being held at Armley, a category B men’s prison in Leeds.”

(Original article Nov. 20, 2015) It’s every trans woman’s nightmare — ending up in a male prison. Even if not physically harmed by other inmates, the mental assault on their mind is sometimes enough to be deadly. This might be the case here.

Vicky Thompson was found unresponsive in her cell in a UK prison. Although paramedics attempted resuscitation, she was pronounced dead on Friday Nov. 13, 2015. The cause of death has not been announced but the West Yorkshire Police said the death in not considered suspicious.

News reports state the victim mentioned to friends she would kill herself if she ended up being placed in a prison for males. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman said there would be an investigation.

———-

Since it is not a suspicious death, this leaves cause one of 3 possible things, a health problem, an accident, or suicide. It would not be prudent to speculate until further information is released. As of this writing, I’ve not seen any confirmation from an official source.

I can say, that a trans woman dead in a male prison for whatever reason is not the kind of ugly PR any prison wants the media banging on their doors about. Hopefully it’ll trigger a change, even if just to keep the media at bay.

  1. It’s not EVERY trans woman’s nightmare to end up in a male prison. Maybe it’s every trans woman who thinks that the only option is to take matters into their own hands, or won’t reach out, or listen to anyone else’s opinions. WE need to stop blaming the system for trans people who commit criminal acts and then fall back on their trans status as a measure of entitlement.

Maybe it’s because every single trans woman out there has a different idea of why they are doing what they are and how they are going to accomplish it. For some it’s about dressing up, for others it’s about sex. For others still, it’s about gender fluid presentation. But no matter what the core rationale…………….if you have committed a crime of any magnitude then you have limited your available choices based on where you are.

    • Thanks for your comment. I’m more concerned about being arrested for being trans, or protesting for our rights. Should we remain silent in fear of being arrested? Then there’s the thing about being innocent but thrown in jail with the charges being resolved at trial. That should scare you.

    • “Entitlement” for being the gender a person is make no sense whatsoever. Its not any entitlement its simply the way it is. Commiting a crime no matter what it is doesn’t allow the state to house one in the improper wing of the jail/prison. If this turns out to be suicide proper respect could very well have saved this person her life…

    • No trans woman should be in a men’s prison. I don’t care what crime she was convicted of committing.
