LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a tweet: “We will not tolerate discrimination or harassment against transgender people anywhere in New York State—period.” With that, Gov. Cuomo ordered an end to anti-trans discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations in the state of New York via executive order.
Cuomo made the announcement Thursday evening (Oct. 22, 2015) during an Empire State Pride Agenda event. According to The Associated Press, Cuomo made these remarks during the event: “It is clear that the fair legal interpretation and definition of a person’s sex includes gender identity and gender expression. It is intolerable to allow discrimination of transgender individuals, and they are one of the most abused, harassed groups in society today.”
Earlier in the day New York Gov. Andrew Coumo made it known he was going to issue the order after the legislature failed in eight attempts to bring transgender people to equal parity with LGB New Yorkers since the passage of the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act in 1990.
According to Buzzfeed, the governor earlier this year pushed his staff to find means to protect trans people and lawyers in Cuomo’s office found he had the authority to order such rule changes under existing law. Issuing such an order is unprecented, but according to an unnamed staffer who spoke with Buzzfeed, Cuomo wanted to right “a historic wrong against transgender people”.

This is, to borrow a quote from Vice President Joe Biden, a big f**king deal!

Thumbs up, Mario. Good move.

I would like to also put attention my tiny little state’s effort for doing it ahead of NY! ❤
🙂
Now lets get the rest on the states to follow suit. Specially the “Bible Belt” states that are supposed to be so ‘Christian like’.
Independent health discriminates against transgender people all the time. It is frustrating to be constantly told thats a gender conforming drug and it’s not in our fourmulary they actually changed most of the way it is because I took them to court and if it would have went to federal court I would have won.
As a lifelong New Yorker I applaud Governor Cuomo on doing this and avoiding the logjam in the State Senate that has existed for years. Way to go Andrew! 🙂
i love new york
