(UPDATE) Second trans woman murdered in Philadelphia; dismembered Argentine trans woman identified

Marcela Chocobar Kiesha JenkinsLEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Updated – Oct. 13, 2015 — Suspect arrested — From The Advocate:

“A 24-year-old Philadelphia man has been arrested in connection with the recent murder of black transgender woman Kiesha Jenkins, reports Philadelphia TV station WCAU.

Pedro Redding was arraigned [Oct. 12, 2015] on murder, conspiracy, and weapons charges, and was denied bail. . . .

Police are still searching for three other men who they believe were involved in attacking Jenkins in the early morning hours of October 6, beating her to the ground and then shooting her twice in the back. Local authorities believe the group has committed a string of robberies in the area and sought to rob the 22-year-old woman as well.”

Note: Police say this was a robbery attempt, not a hate crime.

Original article: A second trans woman of color has been murdered in Philadelphia this year. Police say Kiesha Jenkins, was fatally shot earlier this week. A police investigation found that she was assaulted by five or six men after she stepped out of her car. Then, as she was laying on the ground, she was shot twice in the back by one of the men.

Police say they are looking into whether the victim’s gender identity factored into the crime, but they say they have no motive nor have any arrests been made. Earlier this year in Philadelphia, another trans woman, Kiki Chanel, died following a stabbing.

In Argentina, skeletal remains found 2 weeks ago have been identified as those of Rio Gallegos trans woman Chocobar Marcela. The victim went missing a month ago in the Santa Cruz providence and her whereabouts were unknown until DNA evidence matched her to the remains. The victim body was found dismembered and burned in a vacant neighborhood. No information on suspects was found in translated news reports.

There were seemingly conflicting reports about a lack of police action when she was reported missing — I cannot confirm this one way or another. However, one news report gave an Argentine government agency for people to contact if the police fail to take action: Queries and Reports of the Ministry of National Security, 0800-555-5065.
