LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — An unidentified trans woman waiting at a bus stop in the Newham area of London was violently assaulted by a man who got out of his car and walked up to her. The attacker was urged on by the car’s other occupants who were shouting “kill him, kill him,” the victim told police.
The attack happened late at night May 16th and was reported in the UK news media today. Police still do not have suspect in custody and are now asking for help from the public.
Detective Constable Ben Rouse according to London 24: “This was an unprovoked attack. This suspect is clearly willing to use violence against innocent members of the community.”
I was unable to gather further details on the incident, including information of the victim’s condition other than a broken nose.

Everyone keeps thinking that marriage equality means all is well for everyone, WRONG. Everyone thinks that Caitlyn Jenner coming out as transgender means all is going to be well for the transgender community, WRONG. At worst, these advances are going to cause a backlash against the T.L.G.B. communities. With special attention given to the transgender community. Until the people of the transgender community come out from under the stereotype of the movies “Psycho”, “Silence of the Lambs”, “Dressed to Kill” and many others. Plus television shows from, “M.A.S.H.”, The Flip Wilson Show”, and even “The Carol Burnett Show” to the Warner Brothers cartoons showing characters in ‘drag’. Things will not change. Even today we are being assaulted on cable television be someone who could be called an ally, RuPaul. Yes there have been many advances toward equality for the transgender world, but until people understand that what they see on the television and in the movies is NOT what the actual transgender people are like, we will never be safe from this type of attack.
So agree, couldn’t have said it any better
According to a Gay Star News article yesterday (http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/crossdresser-attacked-london-thugs-friends-shouted-kill-him-kill-him160615) …
The crime is still being investigated by Newham’s Community Safety Unit, but a spokesperson told GSN that it ‘certainly looks like’ a hate crime. They also confirmed the victim was ‘definitely’ not a transgender woman.
Thanks for the comments Stephanie.
I would not go with the police says about “transgender’. Since she was attacked while in drag (cross dressing), then she is under the transgender umbrella, otherwise there would be no “hate crime” aspect to this. The only other possibility was if the person was gay, but cross dressers are rarely gay.
The person attacked may self identify as male and use male pronouns but the police did not disclose this, leaving us in a lurch.
People who attack trans people don’t care if the person is a cross dresser or post op, to them we’re all one and the same.
I completely agree with you, Lexie, regarding the “don’t care.” In any case, however one identifies, attacks such as this are utterly reprehensible
