LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — The accolades for transgender teen Nicole Maines keep coming. The Maine Women’s Fund is honoring her this month with the Samantha Smith Award.
Last year she was named one of Glamour magazine’s “50 inspiring women of the year” and won the Hardy Girls Healthy Women’s Community Organizing Award.
Maines was at the center of a Maine high court ruling that recognized trans students right to use the bathroom of their choice. Among other things, she has educated state legislators, appeared on public radio and volunteered at Equality Maine.
Maines is now a senior and is currently set to appear in a future episode of the TV series Royal Pain. She has identified as female since age 2.
