“Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has signed House Bill 2307 into law, making Oregon the fourth jurisdiction—with California, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia—to protect LGBT minors from conversion therapy. The bill goes into effect immediately.

(Original article, May 9, 2015:) Earlier this week the Oregon Senate sent a bill banning the practice of conversion therapy for youth under the age of 18 to Governor Kate Brown for her signature — she is expected to sign it.
Support for conversion therapy bans has stepped up since the death of Leelah Alcorn — a trans youth who was subject to this therapy and ultimately killed herself. President Obama has since called for states to ban the practice. Oregon will now join California, New Jersey and Washington DC in outlawing the practice.
Senator Sara Gelser: “Discredited, dangerous so called conversion therapy has no place in Oregon. Our kids deserve better. [This bill] is a message to our LGBTQ youth that we know they are born perfect, loved and celebrated.”
Basic Rights Oregon’s Nancy Haque: “This is an important step in protecting LGBTQ youth. The harms caused by conversion therapy are very real and we must do everything we possibly can as a state to prevent the loss of even one child. . . .”
Gov. Brown disclosed she was bisexual more than a decade ago. She was most recently Oregon’s Secretary of State, but moved up to the Governor’s office when then-Gov. John Kitzhaber decided to not complete his fourth term earlier this year and resigned.
