lamar edwards hande oncuLEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — (Two updates — see below.) A gunshot victim who died in Louisville, Kentucky on January 9th is a trans woman according to Transgriot.  The victim, Lamar Papi Edwards, whose preferred first name is unknown, was declared DOA at a hospital after being found by police in a hotel parking lot. Edwards was originally from Indianapolis, Indiana. Police arrested Henry Richard Gleaves two days after the shooting and charged him with her murder.

In Vienna, Austria, an unidentified trans woman Hande Öncü was found dead in her home on Jan 26 after police broke in following concern from a friend. She was found naked with her hands and legs tied behind her back. An autopsy report stated she was most likely strangled and killed two weeks ago. The victim was an asylum seeker from Turkey. Asylum advocates say her status likely contributed to her death.

UPDATE — March 11, 2015: From the Windy City Times:

The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs ( NCAVP ) has learned of the homicide of Papi Edwards, a transgender woman of color, in Louisville, Kentucky, who was shot to death at the Fern Valley Motel on January 9, 2015.

Early police and media accounts consistently misnamed and misgendered the victim, and only now are we learning that, according to BuzzFeed LGBTQ, her name was Papi Edwards and that she identified as a transgender woman.

UPDATE — Feb 13, 2015: From Pink News:

“A 32 year old Serbian man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Hande Ö, a 35 year old trans activist, reports the Local.

Turkish asylum seeker Hande Ö’s body was found lying naked in her apartment in Vienna on January 19. Her hands were tied and she had been strangled with a towel.

DNA found at the scene led police to a 32-year-old Serbian man who had recently robbed another sex worker at a Thai massage studio, and a day later robbed an alternative healer.

The healer was able to give a description of the subject, leading police to make an arrest.”

The name of the person arrested was not disclosed.
