AG Eric Holder channels LBJ; says Great Society legislation includes transgender protection

LBJLEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — While heading out the door, Attorney General Eric Holder is giving transgender workers a tremendous gift — in cases of litigation, federal prosecutors will now take the position that long-enacted civil rights legislation covers discrimination against them.

I’ve no doubt that President Lyndon B. Johnson intended for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include everybody, but along the way, the fracturing of the Democrat party, not to mention the Vietnam war, left many of those who fell between the cracks in limbo for a while. For transgender people, it turned out to be exactly 50 years.

It’s hard to imagine such all-encompassing civil rights or voting rights legislation that passed during Johnson’s Great Society even reaching the floor of Congress for a vote today, or any time in the near future. So, here’s a tip of the hat to those back then who were willing to risk their political life and/or careers for the equalities we enjoy today.

As for the Vietnam war, that’s a topic for another day.

  2. Hats off and three cheers to Attorney General Eric Holder.

  3. While I applaud the Ag for his actions, don’t forget: all this could be undone completely if we don’t get out and vote in 2016. A Republican president and Congressional majority would reverse it in a heartbeat

  5. is great. The only thing this administration has done good is for the transgender community. And I thank them for the bottom my heart. But to say that Lyndon Johnson was for transgender rights. Republicans who voted for the bill that would not have passed without their vote. Is a bit of a stretch.are Democrats that vote for. As a bit of a joke are rewriting history which left have no problem doing

    • You’re your opinion, which of course, is not based on fact. Second, attempting to polarize this discussion with that “left” bit is out of order.

In the ’60s a huge percentage of Republicans were moderates and many Democrats were bigots. Johnson got what he wanted not just because Democrats controlled both Houses, but because he was a powerful politician with people on both sides of the aisle owing him favors.

In passing Great Society legislation, Johnson gave up power to benefit marginalized people. Wall street, banks and big businesses did not gain from this, nor did Johnson personally. Had Johnson not taken this unselfish act, trans people, along with numerous other disenfanchised people, especially black people, would be far worse off today.
