From The Advocate:
“A middle school in New Jersey has reversed course after allegedly telling a 13-year-old transgender girl that she could only attend classes if she dressed and acted like a boy.
Monday evening, Rachel Pepe received news that Middletown, New Jersey’s Thorne Middle School will allow the teenager to attend school as herself.”
(Original article) Trans kid Rachel Pepe ‘cannot return to school as a female and no accommodations will be made for her,’ a school official told Angela Peters, Rachel’s mother. The school is question is Thorne Middle School in a Middletown, New Jersey, school district.
Peters said the school official told her, among other things, ‘the school was not equipped to handle Rachel’ and ‘it would upset the boy-girl ratio in school.’
Trans advocates have supported Peters by arguing that many school districts have been forced to accomodate trans students, and insist Pepe has a strong discrimination case should she persue legal avenues.
According to USA TODAY, the Superintendent of Middletown Schools William O. George stated that he was willing to interview the child to ‘find the appropriate placement for her’ and added: “children with psycho-sexual issues often benefit from a fresh start at a new school.”
I’m thinking the school district is doing a bit of dodging here as if they’re looking to do what best for the district, not the child.
