LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Earlier today the Oregon Health Plan added transgender coverage to the state Medicaid program following efforts by local trans and LGBT organizations. This builds on the earlier inclusion of pubertal suppression treatment for transgender adolescents.
According a Facebook post by TransActive’s Executive Director, Jenn Burleton, this is the gist of the OHP decision: October 1. 2014: Coverage for all pubertal suppression related care AND mental health care. Jan 1 – April 1, 2015: Adding coverage for cross-sex hormones and gender confirmation surgeries.
The local organizations behind this victory are the TransActive Gender Center, Basic Rights Oregon, Portland Q Center and Cascade Aids Project.

Plans cover bottom surgery if they cover any surgery. But many won’t cover other “cosmetic” procedures, like FFS, tracheal shave, BA, liposuction, hair transplants, and hair removal. But fixing the visible gender markers are arguably more important because that’s what folks see all the time. Covering them and voice therapy (or voice surgery if you dare risk it) is also a safety issue because far too many bigots who read folks because of the wrong markers hurt or kill them!
one of the best things i ever heard happen
