Superb Rolling Stone article on the saga of trans woman CeCe McDonald

cece mcdonald 2LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Fresh on the heels of Laverne Cox’s article in Time magazine, Rolling Stone follows up with a great piece on trans woman CeCe McDonald.

McDonald, of course, is the trans woman of color that ended up spending time in jail following an unprovoked attack by a man who was taunting her. The attacker bled to death after he was stabbed by McDonald in self-defense.  McDonald is now out of prison.

The Rolling Stone piece, titled The Transgender Crucible, written by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, is not only a factual accounting of the transphobic attack that brought McDonald to the attention of the media, but also hits all bases of the downside of being a trans woman of color in our society today.

McDonald in Rolling Stone talking about the plight of trans women of color:

“You never hear, ‘She passed on her own, natural causes, old age,’ no, no, no.  She’s either raped and killed, she’s jumped and killed, stalked and killed — or just killed.”

Excellent reading. This story came out today (July 29) in the magazine edition of Rolling Stone and will not be available online for at least a week.

  1. All I can say is CeCeis a true and real heroine who first survived a vicious attack by a transphobic neo-Nazi and then survived the very worst that our twisted criminal justice could put her through. The prosecutors and the judge should be ashamed of themselves. How is it that CeCe could found guilty of manslaughter when she was clearly acting in self-defense (my God, she was badly wounded, cut to the bone) yet George Zimmerman, who clearly instigated the incident that resulted in him murdering an unarmed Treyvon Martin, was found innocent? INJUSTICE ABOUNDS! Yet CeCe survived and is well and thriving! Thank God, and thanks to Laverne Cox for producing the documentary film about CeCe, and most of all thank you CeCe for being so beautiful and so strong. You’re an absolutely outstanding role model and heroically demonstrate strength, courage, and character.
