LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Government reforms opened the door for the seating of Belgium’s first openly transgender MP. Petra De Sutter was sworn in on July 10th to the Belgium Senate in Brussels.

De Sutter is a department head at University Hospital Ghent and a professor at the University of Ghent. She campaigned on environmental and health issues. It is expected she will focus on health issues while serving as member of Parliament.

According to the Bay Area Reporter, the current and former transgender MPs around the world are Anna Grodzka in Poland, Georgina Beyer in New Zealand and former Italian MP Vladimir Luxuria.
