LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Today is another milestone in a year of milestones for transgender people — trans woman Laverne Cox was nominated for an Emmy for her role in the television series Orange Is the New Black.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences nominated Cox for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Cox portrays trans inmate Sophia Burset in the series.
This makes Cox the first transgender actress nominated for an Emmy. Following an appearance on the cover of Time magazine two months ago, it’s clear Cox isn’t merely blazing a trail, but rather, bulldozing down barriers for transgender people.
Cox is a true trans role model in popular culture these days — something in the past often were represented by buffoons (that’s you RuPaul). And this is a HUGE turnabout.
The Emmy Awards will be held on Aug. 25.
