LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — UPDATE Aug, 1, 2014 — Arrests have been made in both recent trans women murder cases — one for the victim found shot to death in Ohio and another for the victim burnt to death in Florida. (See below.)
Original article: A body found burned to death in Ft. Meyers, Florida [earlier this year] has been identified as trans woman Yaz’min Shancez. Her remains were found behind a dumpster. Reports say the police have no leads and they would not comment whether this was a hate crime. They are asking for the public’s help with information on the crime: Fort Myers Police Department 239-321-7700.
Cincinnati, Ohio police say a person gunned down in the middle of the street [earlier this year] is trans woman Tiffany Edwards. She was found by a sanitation worker driving by and was pronounced dead at the scene. No additional information about the crime was made available.
UPDATE July 2, 2014 – Suspect turns himself in. From The Advocate:
“A suspect in the shooting murder of 28-year-old transgender woman Tiffany Edwards has turned himself in after police issued a warrant for his arrest on Saturday.
Quamar Edwards — who is not related to the victim — turned himself in earlier today in connection with the June 26 murder of Tiffany Edwards, whose body was found shot to death in the Cincinnati suburb of Walnut Hills, Ohio. Tiffany Edwards was the fourth transgender woman found murdered in Ohio since January 2013, and the fourth trans woman of color murdered in the U.S. during the month of June.
WLWT reports that, according to Quamar Edwards’ uncle, he provided the victim with a ride, but “lost his cool” when she “came onto him.”
