AMA: No surgery required for trans birth certificate ID change

transgender birth certificateLEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — In a vote that was as close as a Bush-era presidential election, the American Medical Association’s policy making panel decided that transgender people need not have surgery to get their gender ID change on their birth certificates.

The AMA policy makers took up this issue after it became apparent individual states were going down completely different roads on the transgender birth certificate issue.

The AMA’s Dr. Ardis Dee Hoven: “State laws must acknowledge that the correct course of treatment for any given individual is a decision that rests with the patient and the treating physicians.”

According to Forbes, the new AMA policy included the following language: “Birth certificates are primarily used for legal matters, not medical,” and “Requiring sex-reassignment surgery places a burden on an already marginalized population.”

While this isn’t exactly law, it is another milestone in a year of trans rights milestones. It’ll  be just a matter of time before all states go down the way of New York. Gov. Chris Christie’s actions to derail transgender residents of New Jersey likely had a hand in the AMA decision.

Last I hear, New York required G.R.S. before they a name change.

  2. Lexi. The last thread you published before this thread (The one about the birth certificate detailed information) is not working. Could you please repost it.
