Transgender teacher suspended following parental transphobia

roger beard construction lumberton texasLEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — A transgender substitute teacher for Lumberton Independent School District in Texas found herself suspended following a “distraction” complaint from a parent of one of the students in her class.

Laura Jane Klug was told to stay home until the school board decides whether to let her return to work. Klug says she’s a professional and has worked at the school numerous times. She said an open school board meeting on Thursday will likely draw many parents.

According to KBMT-TV, the parent who complained, Roger Beard, an owner of a construction company in Lumberton, said this about Klug:

“If it does affect my child and his ability to learn or if it causes questions that I don’t feel are appropriate then undoubtedly there’s an issue with having somebody transgender, transsexual or transvestite, to be teaching that age group.”

——–

Clearly, the school board isn’t tuned in to the legal rights of trans employees these days. If they come down on the wrong side of history on this one, they’ll no doubt eventually find themselves writing a big check to Ms. Klug. Meanwhile, the nice folks in Lumberton ought to have their construction needs done elsewhere — there are other people more deserving of your business than Roger Beard.

  1. If anyone on your page has any leads of who to contact and who else to get the word out to, please let us know. We are fighting tooth and nail to get Laura the help she well deserves! This is absurd and reflects badly on our small town. Not everyone here is full of hate like some of the idiot.

  2. Transphobic parents are a distraction to me, please tell transphobic parents to stay in their cave.

The teacher needs to be immediately re-instated with all back pay, and the parent needs to be told to shut the hell up.

  3. It is multiple parents Bobbie Jo. Multiple ignorant parents that breed hate.

  4. This ‘concerned parent’ needs to learn the difference between those three terms. But in his three adjectives he is Texan, transphobic, and homophobic all at the same time. I think he and the school board need to be held accountable.

Here is this “concerned parent’s” facebook…

  6. There is more than just him. Its like a modern day Salem witch trial going on over here. We are rallying for Laura and hopefully our voices will be enough. These parents are a joke. How do you sit there with your bible in your hands and tell people not to allow this person around your children because she is different? We have a facebook page in support of Laura. LET HER TEACH. if anyone is interested in joining

EQUALITY TEXAS CALLS FOR REINSTATEMENT OF TRANSGENDER TEACHER AUSTIN –

In a joint letter to members of Lumberton Independent School District’s Board of Trustees the board chairs of Equality Texas and the Equality Texas Foundation today called for the reinstatement of a teacher suspended because she is transgender. The letter, from Equality Texas’ Sam Tornabene and the Equality Texas Foundation’s Steve Rudner, follows media reports that Laura Jane Klug, a substitute Teacher in LISD, has been suspended after the parent of a student complained that the presence of a transgender teacher in the classroom distracted students. “As the fiduciary agents of LISD we want to be certain that you are aware that denying employment on the basis of a person’s gender expression is a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and that doing so creates liability for the district,” write Tornabene and Rudner. “More importantly, discrimination in employment because a person is transgender is a violation of basic Texas values. We are a state that, above all else, believes that anyone who is willing to work hard, and does their job well, deserves a chance. Denying that equal dignity runs contrary to the deepest fibers that weave us together.” KBTM, 12News reports that the LISD board of trustees will determine Ms. Klug’s future employment in a closed session, but that public input is anticipated at the public meeting of the board Thursday evening, April 10 at 7:00 pm. The Board of Trustees meets at 121 South Main, Lumberton, TX 77657.

LUMBERTON, Texas – A transgender teacher is all the talk in East Texas.

Laura Klug teaches fifth grade, and some parents complained that she was a distraction.

The school board held a meeting Thursday night to hear from concerned parents, but instead people in support of the transgendered teacher flooded the board meeting, spilling out in the hallway.

The board plans to vote in the next couple days on whether to fire Klug.

  9. LAURA IS REINSTATED!!!! Our battle is far from over but her job is not!!! Our small town may be riddled with ignorance but the right thing has shown through!! We are beyond elated for Laura.

  10. Can you tell us more about this? I’d want to find out some additional information.
