NJ lawmakers thumbs nose at Gov. Christie, reintroduces trans birth certificate bill

chris christie transLEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Buried under the ongoing media coverage of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’ Bridgegate scandals is the news that two state senators reintroduced a bill that would delete the requirement trans people undergo surgery before being allowed to change their gender marker on their birth certificates.

According to a report in The Advocate, this is virtually the same bill Gov. Christie vetoed almost one month ago. The bill, introduced by state Senators Joseph Vitale and Diane Allen, would amend the New Jersey state code to allow change after the person has ‘undergone clinically appropriate treatment’ by a licensed medical professional or if they are intersex.

Although no hearing date is scheduled, the bill has already been assigned to the Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.

———-

I don’t know if this Tea Party-style hat trick will be successful because it will take time for the bill to make its way to through committees and two houses — the Bridgegate thing may have blown over by the time it reaches Christie’s desk if the plan was to take political advantage of this furor. On the other hand, there might someone else sitting at that desk.

  1. This has been the law where I live for going on two years. Basically the requirement is a letter from your doctor. What it amounts to in practice is one year of medically supervised HRT.
