LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — In a kingdom known for the severe oppression of women, it is no surprise when Kuwait once again stepped up enforcement of a 2007 penal code that called for the arrest of anyone ‘imitating the appearance of a member of the opposite sex’.
Recently, six trans women were arrested, including some turned in by their fellow neighbors. Some faced additional charges, including “sexual-assault” and “entering a space dedicated to women-only” according to a report in The Huffington Post UK.
Kuwaiti transgender activist NourAnne Belatoui: “Now anyone who looks in the slightest nonconforming to Kuwaiti strict gender stereotypes is being arrested, mostly transgender and effeminate looking men.”
Kuwait isn’t a third world nation. It’s one of the world’s wealthiest nations and the United States has spent billions preserving it’s existence. I’ve written a number of articles about the state sponsored abuse of trans people in Kuwait:
