Oregon slams defiant bar owner: pay $400,000 to banned transgender patrons

chrispennerkatuTHE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — I’ve been following this bizarre story since the beginning — the gist: the owner of the bar left a voice mail message for trans patrons telling them not to return.

Chris Penner, the owner of this Portland, Oregon bar, then called the Portsmouth Club, was given numerous opportunities during this year long investigation by the state to resolve the issue, but he remained defiant to the end, believing he did not discriminate against trans people. The state disagreed, and as a result, Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian’s office ordered Penner to pay $400,000 to the trans patrons he boot from his bar.

Penner was charged with violating the 2007 Oregon Equality Act which protects trans and LGBT people in housing, employment and public places.

Clearly this ruling is going to be a severe wake-up call for other businesses, employers and landlords that continue to discriminate.

  1. I’ll drink to that … cheers!

  2. I hope this takes his liquor license away.

    • Someone should take your license to reply away. While the fine and notoriety are okay with me, why would you see the bar close, the people working there lose their jobs, and the loss of tax revenue ? What possible good or connection would that create. Personal animus is so revealing.

    • Terminating his liquor license is probably not necessary even if it were appropriate, since a $400,000 hit to a local business will most likely cause it to close.

    • Earth to Shelley, are you there Shelley? This was not a liquor offense. If it was and he was a repeat offender, then yes, it would merit the removal or suspension of said license. However, this was a discrimination violation. HUGE difference. In the future, please read the article before posting. Sheesh.

  3. He may have insurance. We’ll see.

  4. I doubt someone as stupid as him would have insurance.

  5. This is bullshit! Why should anyone be forced to serve someone they don’t want? If they hate you why the hell would you want to give them your money and support them? Go somewhere else where you will be appreciated and support their business. Also, if someone hates you and is forced to serve you they may hock loogies in your beverage and uhhh…gross, who wants to drink mucus? Put on your thinking caps please.
