THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Sitting on California Governor Jerry Brown’s desk awaiting his signature is legislation that will bring equality to transgender K-12 students in the state.
But 16-year-old transgender student Ashton Lee isn’t just sitting around hoping Brown will sign it — he’s taken additional steps in the form of starting and circulating a petition urging the governor to sign it. On Wednesday, he delivered 5,700 signatures to the governor’s office in Sacramento in hopes that he gets one back.
Lee in the Sacramento Bee: “It’ll help me so much at school, and people like me, and it will make it so much easier to graduate and be who we are and be accepted and understood. It’s just going to make it so much easier.”
Lee had other plans for his future, but after speaking to the California Senate when the bill was being considered, and now, with the petition, he says: “Maybe now I’ll become a lobbyist or a legislator. I want to help people.”
