THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — UPDATE: Aug 12, 2013 – Gov. Brown signed the trans student equality bill earlier today.
From USA Today:
“Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown announced that he had signed AB1266, which also will allow transgender students to choose whether they want to play boys’ or girls’ sports. The new law gives students the right “to participate in sex-segregated programs, activities and facilities” based on their self-perception and regardless of their birth gender.
Supporters said it will help reduce bullying and discrimination against transgender students. It comes as the families of transgender students have been waging local battles with school districts across the country over what restrooms and locker rooms their children can use, disagreements that have sometimes landed in court.”

Original story:
If Governor Jerry Brown signs AB 1266, all K-12 schools in the state would be required to allow transgender students use bathrooms and other facilities regardless of the sex listed on school records. In addition, transgender students will be able to participate in sex-segregated sports and other programs.
California would be the first state to have such a K-12 trans equality law. Nationally, some locales and school districts already have such a law or policy. In California, this includes the Los Angeles Unified School District.

With this statewide law, another precedent would be set making it even more difficult for state lawmakers elsewhere who are trying to enact laws to prevent schools from adopting trans rights policies.
