THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — It was a rape of a trans woman in Sweden that brought to attention the ‘sterilization before legal gender change’ law that was on the books in there and in what I thought was just a few other European nations. As it turns out, most European nations have a similar law. In fact, it would be simpler to list the countries that don’t have the sterilization requirement — the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. (Sweden is dropping their requirement this year and Hungary apparently doesn’t enforce theirs.)
So what of Germany, France, The Netherlands and twenty-six other European countries? Stunningly, sterilization is still required before a gender change can become legal.
Human rights organizations consider sterilization human rights abuse, the United Nations consider it torture and it is somewhat surprising that there isn’t stepped up efforts from within these countries’ governments to reverse these conditions.
However, other entities, such as the Council of Europe, are taking the issue head on. According to an article in Gay Star News, a report coming out in June will address this issue and hopefully accelerate change in Europe. However, it won’t be easy: Transgender Europe’s Richard Köhler made that clear in his comment to the GSN: ‘The debates have shown conservatives are really afraid of the “pregnant man” so they want to insist on sterilization.”

The Netherlands is probably dropping this requirement later this year. The Lower House has voted in favour. The Upper House still has to vote but it’ll most probably pass.
It was actually dropped in Germany in January 2011 because it violates basic human rights.
I was really shocked when i found out that we even had such an idiotic law until only a year ago before i came out in 2012. For once i saw a good side in not coming out back in 2005.
I presume from the article that this law applies to transsexuals, not to all transgendered people? Please remember that the vast majority of people who call themselves transgendered are actually crossdressers. In fact, being pedantic, transsexualism is NOT part of transgender – it’s transsexualism … sex and gender are not interchangible! I would have thought Lexie of all people would appreciate this.
It applies to anyone that wants to have their sex marker changed on legal documents.
Being a sapient species with sexually dimorphic neurology, I’d have to argue that yes, sex and gender are interchangable. You might be confusing sex/gender with assigned sex or genital morphology or gender/sex presentation.
Also, transgender not being a verb, the -ed suffix is superfluous… at best.
Hey, can you give me another link to the PayPal option for the DVD? (Amazon boycott due to tax avoidance) The current link doesn’t work (please post here so I’m informed by email)
