THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — (UPDATED — ACLU involved. See below.) In what seemed to be a certain victory for trans student Issak Oliver Wolfe in his quest to be prom king, ended up being anything but after the York, Pennsylvania high school’s principal reportedly changed Wolfe’s gender to female and inserted his birth name on the ballot.

In a news report by NewNowNext, it was said that the Red Lion Area Senior High School’s principal, Mark Shue, made the switch just prior to distribution of the official ballots to the students.

The NewNowNext story is primarily a one-sided account and I could not find another source having Mr. Shue’s or the school district’s side of this matter. There is a change.org petition that has commentary that may or may not be helpful. The petition may, however, help trigger a response from the school in the media.

UPDATE — April 26, 2013: The ACLU gets involved. From the York Dispatch:

The American Civil Liberties Union has demanded Red Lion Area School District apologize to the transgender high school student involved in the prom king controversy.

The ACLU said Issak Wolfe, a senior Red Lion student whose birth name is Sierra Stambaugh, should be issued an apology by the district after high school principal Mark Shue decided to place Wolfe on the prom court ballot under prom queen and under his birth name, despite Wolfe identifying himself as a transgender male for several years and asking to run as a prom king candidate.

The demand is part of a letter dated April 26 sent to the district. Legal action could be sought, according to Molly Tack-Hooper, ACLU staff attorney, although the ACLU hopes it won’t come to that.

“There’s very clear liability for the school district,” Tack-Hooper said, citing similar situations around the country.
