UFC quickly suspends transphobic fighter

mattmitrionTHE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Following a rant that included calling trans athlete Fallon Fox “a lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak,”  heavyweight fighter Matt Mitrione was quickly suspended by the UFC.

Mitrione: “Because she’s [Fallon] not a he. He’s a he,” he said. “He’s chromosomally a man. He had a gender change, not a sex change. He’s still a man. He was a man for 31 years. Thirty-one years. That’s a couple years younger than I am. He’s a man. Six years of taking performance de-hancing drugs, you think is going to change all that? That’s ridiculous. . . .That is a lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak, and I mean that. Because you lied on your license to beat up women. That’s disgusting. . . .”

Response from the UFC following Mitrione’s suspension: “The UFC was appalled by the transphobic comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione today in an interview on ‘The MMA Hour.’ The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and – as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr. Mitrione’s UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated. The UFC is a friend and ally of the LGBT community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with dignity and respect.”

Wow. And kudos to the UFC for the swift action.

  1. its also called professionalism

  2. Wow, and Kudos indeed! Who knew that organizations like MMA and UFC could/ or woould be so Trans and LGB supportive? If we are visible and authentic, we will continue to find Allies in many unexpected places.

  3. Yes, friends and supporters can appear in the most unexpected of places. It’s actions such as these that keep me from being completely cynical about the human race. Almost.

  4. I am not a fan of this sport but I will say a hearty “Well done UFC, you totally rock” for taking this swift action and long may your positive attitude continue. I would very much like to see this positivity go viral in the entire sporting world

  5. Its an asshole for sure, a victim of an education system that forced people to intolerance now by law, education and propaganda and now forces the same people to simulated tolerance by the same instruments.

But I don´t know if censorship is the right way.

It´s just force and stupid powerpolitics. And nothing that changes more than the appearance of the cooperation. Fuck the state, fuck the system, people like Mitrion are just dumb products of it, they are what the system wants them to be. Like it wants US to be slaves begging for fake acceptance instead of resisting in the same matter the system fucks our lives.

  6. Okay, but what about what UFC president Dana White said recently:

“So before you even think about fighting in the UFC or whatever – he was a man and now he’s a woman – he’s fighting girls who have losing records. Before you get too crazy about him being in the UFC, he’s so freaking far from being in the UFC that it’s not even funny.”

Ah, blatant transphobia. I don’t see how they can have it both ways.

    http://www.mmajunkie.com/news/2013/03/dana-white-on-transgender-fighter-fallon-fox-not-even-close-to-ufc-ready?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

    • Well, I think that what Dana was saying is that all the hype about how bad-ass Fallon may be, it would be good to see him fight some women who ARE badasses, and see how he holds up. If he ends up knocking out the female heavyweight champion in 39 seconds there may be a case for his ‘previous manhood’ disqualifying him from fighting women. If Fallon gets her ass kicked though, then all the hype is unfounded. That is what I took away from it 🙂

      • Is there a reason you keep referring to Fallon Fox as a “he?”

See? THAT is what is transphobic about it.

        • Yes. Confusion and mistakes, typing with too any things on my mind with no way to edit. Given the fact that I am a MtF transgender female, I highly doubt I am transphobic.

Some of you peeps are a bit too quick to scream transphobia, yes?

People CAN make legitimate mistakes Fallon is a generic name and we are talking about boxing…honest mistake, but my bad

    • ummm.. I didn’t call you transphobic. I said that is what was transphobic about what Dana White said.

      • Kk. Fair point. But I don’t think that every misused pronoun or even some viewpoints are necessarily transphobic, and we have to get out of that mindset. I know we are frustrated, but it isnt going to help. On a MtF deciding to become a UFC fighter in the female division? Im not so comfortable with that. Matt is an ignorant buffoon who doesnt know how to articulate his point but the premise is sound. Dana White tried to articulate better, but failed miserably. Matt? Transphobic. Dana? Not s’much.

It CAN be seen by those who do not understand that Fallon couldnt beat a man in the ring so “he” decided to become a female. I know that is preposterous, and you know it too, but the fact remains that Fallon had the ‘benefits'(in this scenario) of years of natural testosterone enhancement that HRT is not going to nullify fully. Fallon does definitely have an advantage here, and that is the risk ran by any t-girl who wants to perform in sports.

Sometimes we have to make decisions in life. If I were good at sports, and the drive was so great that I stay in sports, I may have decided against transitioning. If the drive to fully express myself for who I am was as strong in me as it has been…I would likely forego being an athlete.

There are some legitimate concern involved here on all sides. We all need to remember that and choose our battles wisely. 🙂

        • *sigh*

          I would disagree. Strongly.

If someone intentionally and repeatedly misgenders someone, that IS transphobic. White did this. He knew what he was saying.

Secondly, I have trouble taking etiquette suggestions from someone who uses “MtF” as a noun (as you did above) or the term “T Girl.” Totally gross. Seriously.

  8. Yep, acceptance of transgendered (including transsexual) people rather than ‘exceptance’, is the next big hurdle in this world for people and religions to deal with. Unfortunately, the person who will suffer the most (even to suicide) will be the transgendered person from age 4 through 75+ years old, who needs to become the other gender.

  9. and yes Sabrina, there are people in our own trans ranks who can be transphobic See the TS separatist rants they post at their websites as an example of that internalized transphobia.

  10. Thanks for the comments everyone!

  11. I was wondering if you ever considered changing the structure of
your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.

Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?
