Tragic oppression of transgender people in Kuwait continues

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — The latest — A young trans woman and her mother were arrested after the police decided that a young woman in a car was a ‘boy in women’s clothing’.

I’ve been tracking these arrests and Gay Star News is reporting there are now 16 trans women in jail in Kuwait.

This morality campaign, partially triggered by the Arab Spring, targets more than just trans people — LGB people are also being oppressed under a 2007 Islamic-backed law allowing the Kuwaiti government to curtail the rights of trans and LGBT citizens.

Kuwait was hit in a Human Rights Watch report in January which slammed them for the arrests, abuse and torture of trans people in that country. Read that report here: http://www.hrw.org/news/2012/01/15/kuwait-end-police-abuses-against-transgender-women

Kuwait isn’t just some third world country. They’re intelligent and wealthy. The United States spent hundreds of billion of dollars rescuing them in the first Gulf War. If the mid east explodes into war, the United States is likely to come to the aid of Kuwait again. We have the upper hand here and requiring that the Kuwaiti government knock off the arrests and torture of its trans and LGBT citizens ought to be a relatively easy task.

  1. One reason why religion can’t be the law of all land; this is tragic.

  2. I can’t believe it. Across the Gulf in Iran, trans-women and trans-men are accepted and allowed to get a GRS to make them congruent. This was by order of the Iran Islamic Ayatollah Leader a few years ago. The Kuwaiti Islamic government should easily follow Iran’s lead in this issue for trans-folk. This is outrageous.

    • And what about non-trans LGB folks? Who cares what the Ayatollah said in another theocracy? Separation of church and state should be the rallying cry, not “Its okay, it doesn’t violate the state religion”…

  3. I really wish that religion would just shut up and get educated by realistic science, psychology, and medical truths. Maybe then they would get a life.

  4. Thanks for your comments everyone!
