THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is refusing to drop its lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies program despite a political firestorm from the right insisting that they do.
The university’s president, Joseph Savoie, says the program was created after it became apparent there was a need for it. He says that kowtowing to outside political pressure endangers the university’s accreditation.
Savoie: “Experienced graduates will need to have a broad breath of knowledge, flexibility, drive and compassion, they will need to be able to think across platforms, understand society and culture and see technology and training as tools, rather than an end to themselves.”
Rep. Jeff Landry, R-New Iberia, Sen. David Vitter, R-La and the Louisiana Family Forum are among those pressuring Savoie to dump the program.
Anne Johnson, director of Campus Progress, a student advocacy organization: “Rep. Landry is free to deny the existence of LGBT people, but the academic programs shouldn’t be subject to a backward brand of politics young Americans rejected long ago.”
That’s right — Rep. Landry and his cohorts may choose to live in the 19 century, but the rest of us reside in the current century.
