THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — The message said: “You deserve divine punishment and death, but before death you should suffer. You are damned from birth to death” (loosely translated from Spanish).
As soon as they opened, Casa Ruby received this death threat — underscoring the perils faced by trans people everywhere. Physical harm and death — the very things the newly opened Washington DC area community center is designed to provide transgender people an escape from — is something they live with every day.
DC police chief Cathy Lanier has been in contact with Casa Ruby founder Ruby Corado and LGBT groups are offering support but after dozens of funerals and hundreds of hospital visits of victims of trans violence, Corado takes these things seriously. But in spite of the message, Corado says the mission of the community center to protect trans people from violence will continue.
