Transgender student-teacher fired for supposed violation of “code of professional conduct”

Supt. Rick Earley fires trans student-teacher

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — A trans student-teacher, a senior at Wilmington College in Ohio, was fired from his job at Hillsboro High School by superintendent Rick Earley for violating the Licensure Code of Professional Conduct for Ohio Educators. (The name of the trans-man was not disclosed and I’ve yet to find it elsewhere.)

Reportedly the student-teacher talked about his being transgender in class which Earley believes to be an ethics violation. The Wilmington News Journal reportedly asked Earley twice to cite the specific code the student-teacher violated but Earley declined to respond.

Earley: “We expect all employees or anyone who comes into our district to be sure to understand the Ohio Code of Ethics for Ohio Educators. Any violation of that we take seriously because we want to protect the well-being of our students . . .”

The trans student-teacher: “I would much rather say it very openly and honestly and ask if they have questions, comments or concerns, than for it to get around and be misconstrued . . .”

Although the student-teacher had three earlier training placements with the school district and trans advocates say he may have protection with the Title IX federal law, the student-teacher has indicated he isn’t going to take legal action.

More: Transgender student-teacher dismissed.

This newspaper’s op-ed piece agrees with Earley’s decision: http://timesgazette.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&SubSectionID=1&ArticleID=184590
