Oakland, CA trans people without a specific gender will be able to get city-issued ID cards.

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Transgender people in Oakland, CA without a specific gender will now have a way to prove they are with the new city-issued identification card. While these ID cards were primarily a device created to give illegal immigrants a way of proving their identities, they’re also available for the urban poor without bank accounts to use as a debit card and trans people with ID issues. The cards will cost $15/year and the city is expecting to issue up to 30,000 cards total, in 2012.

There is scant additional information on the transgender aspect of these ID cards at this time. Most of the news reports are about the debit function of the cards. I’ll update if more on this comes my way.
