THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — The detention center guard threatened trans woman Tanya Guzman-Martinez with deportation if she did not give in to his demands. After being sexually assaulted by the guard, she was then housed with the male population at the Eloy Detention Center in Arizona and suffered more sexual abuse at the hands of male detainees.
The ACLU is suing the Corrections Corporation of America and local and federal agencies on behalf of Guzman-Martinez. The guard was charged with a minor sex attempt and sentenced to time served — two days.
The ACLU’s Alessandra Soler Meetze: “They did nothing. They failed to protect her from abusive staff members. They failed to protect her from male detainees.”
ACLU Attorney, Victoria Lopez: “Tanya left Mexico to seek refuge from the persecution she suffered because of her gender identity, and was exposed to even greater trauma at the hands of immigration officials who failed to take appropriate measures to protect her while she was in their custody.”
