How many Americans are transgender? Recent studies reveals clues.

700,000 transgender Americans? Could be says recent research data.

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT – While precise numbers still remain elusive, roughly 700,000 or 1 out of every 330 Americans are transgender. The majority of these individuals are somewhat along the path of transitioning to another gender.

No matter how you cut it, this is a sizable ballpark number and it seems to pencil out with the  ratio through my own personal experience. Its also a big enough number to matter to politicians and community leaders.

There is also additional trans data in these studies, some of which I reported on earlier this year.

About the studies (from the Times Union): The most recent data from surveys including the 2006-2008 National Survey of Family Growth, the 2009 California Health Interview Survey and federal data such as the Decennial Census or the American Community Survey were analyzed by Gary Gates, a distinguished scholar at the Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law. Gates, co-author of “The Gay and Lesbian Atlas,” released a detailed report on LGBT numbers in an April 2011 study from the Williams Institute.

  1. “The majority of these individuals are somewhat along the path of transitioning to another gender.”

What about a mention for those who cannot transition for health or financial reason, as well as those who choose not to–whether it is spiritually or idnentitywise inappropriate.

    • I believe all of these people are included the 700K figure. They likely included people that live as a different gender or simply state they are transgender but have not made any movement towards transitioning.

  2. I wonder if this study included straight-identified cis-men who enjoy wearing women’s clothing and adopting a female persona (esp for nonsexual reasons) but have no desire to transition, socially or medically? Somehow I very much doubt it, or I think those numbers would be a lot higher.

(At some point someone in that particular category indicated to me that they thought this may actually represent the largest percentage of the “transgender” population, and possibly the most invisible. Not sure whether I believed that myself, but it was certainly a revelation.)

    • I don’t think very many straight men (aka crossdressers) would state they are transgender, although there are likely some that are but are too early in the discovery stage of their ‘alternative gender exploration’ to know. You may indeed correct that this may be a larger group. We may find out someday.
