Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, ends, but for many transgender people, its still dicey.

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Military rules still consider transgender people unfit to serve causing many to feel bittersweet about the end of DADT. TG people wishing to serve still have to keep their status to themselves.

Historically, many trans people have served in the military dating back to the Civil War. This clearly appears to be one crack in the repeal of DADT that needs to be fixed.

From the Windy City Times: A diagnosis of “gender identity disorder” can constitute grounds for medical and mental health dismissal. According to a news statement from NCTE [National Center for Transgender Equality], cross-dressing, taking hormones or accessing medical and mental health care outside of the military can also lead to military discharge.”

More: “We were totally supportive of the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,'” said Monica Helms, president of the Transgender American Veterans Association. “We want to make sure that people know, hey, we’re still discriminated against.”
