LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Concerns were raised by readers of my last post. Indeed, not all promises have been kept. I concede that. I do believe Obama has made a good faith effort to do right but may have underestimated his ability to make sweeping changes. Executive Orders can only go so far. A new president can come in and wipe that slate clean. Congress is hostile–unwilling to enact legislation to dig us out of our current economic problems, never mind new equality laws.
The best thing Obama can do for us right now is to keep appointing liberal judges and Supreme Court nominees. This ensures that our courts interprets the Constitution fairly and favorably towards trans/LGBT people.
After the 2012 Congressional election, the climate may change enough enabling Obama another crack at fulfilling these promises.
