I struggle a lot less these days when pondering to whether to write about topics that would be considered ‘puff pieces’ in the mainstream press. But in the trans world, these things are often major accomplishments — the positive public attention and the load of good will these thing bring to us is something we couldn’t possibly buy.
The there is also another factor — trans kids. They too, need inspiration, positive reinforcement, and in short, their own role models! By golly, if a 16-year-old trans student from California can fill the bill, the better it is for all of us.
We’re talking about Cassidy Lynn Campbell, a trans student at Marina High School in Huntington Beach. CA. Her mom is on board and so are most of her friends. There’s bullies on the internet she says, but she’s not letting them stop her.
She’s also somewhat of a sensation on YouTube. I happened to view a few and I admit — they’re pretty good. In the link I selected below, she shows how she transforms with make up in ‘fast-forward scan’. The whole process in a few minutes. Impressive.
Trans role model? You betcha! Puff Piece? No way!
Update – Sept. 21, 2013, Trans student named homecoming queen! From Transgriot:
“Trans history was made last night (Sept. 20, 2013) in Huntington Beach, CA as Cassidy Lynn Campbell was elected by the student body of Marina High School as their homecoming queen.”
